What’s so great about Cabin Porn?

I don’t have a cabin, I don’t even really live near anywhere remotely wild. But I know I’m not alone when I say I find something fascinating about the outdoors.
More and more of us today spend increasing amounts of time surrounded by the electronic trappings that feature in to the average persons day to day life. I think creatives more than most end up looking at photoshop, code, smartphones or tablets more than the average person. But most people to be honest are fine with this, we find our own coping mechanisms.. or some of us don’t even need to cope, we fit in without effort.
I think I’m just one of those who needs to get away. I couldn’t imagine a life without photoshop and have spent nights up coding but I need to get away every once in awhile. For people in general I think we’re surrounded by more noise, advertising and flashing lights than our parents ever experienced growing up. The more intense our immersion in this new world I think the greater the awareness and desire for distinction is, regardless of how we choose to explore it.
It’s ironic at the same time that for the majority of us who can’t slip away in to the wilderness when we want can use the same electronic trappings to ease the jarring contrast we find on a day to day level around us. Whether online or otherwise we can come together and share our experiences of escape. Don’t these ultimately enhance our experiences of the wilderness? Extend it in some way?
Even if our media, our digital environments can serve to touch on and extend our experiences of wilderness. It only extends as far as wilderness, as an idea, continues to serve as a reality in our personal lives. Without it I think we’d inevitably loose touch with the world outside ourselves.
